The Highball
Highball is actually a railroad term. When a signalman wanted an approaching train to speed up, he'd attach a ball to a tall pole alongside the track. We can safely conclude that the term graduated over to mixology parlance as a way to signal a sluggish bartender to get things moving as well. Which only makes sense, because the classic Highball is a classically quick and simple drink to concoct.
There is no one recipe for a Highball; it can be made with bourbon, whiskey, gin, or rum. Great Highballs, of course, are mixed only with Schweppes Ginger Ale or Schweppes Club Soda.
Fill a Highball glass with ice, then add:
- 2 ounces of the spirit of your choice
- Fill with Schweppes Ginger Ale or Schweppes Club Soda
- Add a twist of lemon peel and stir.
