The Drinks
Manhattan
You can't call yourself a true Mixmaster if you don't know your way around this old boy. He's that swarthy, charming crosstown cousin to the Martini, in some ways just as simple, and in some ways just as complex. Much like the Martini, the Manhattan is a beautiful drink when done right, but a horrible mess when done wrong.
The most important thing to remember is that there's no such thing as a Bourbon Manhattan. Call it what you want—a Schenectady, a Yonkers, or better yet, a mistake. A true Manhattan requires good old rye whiskey, or if none is available, one of the better Canadian Blends can stand in. Bourbon is just too sweet for this mix.
Fill your glass cocktail mixer with cracked ice. Add and stir well:
- 1.5 ounces of Rye Whiskey (or a rye-based Canadian Blend)
- 3/4 ounce Vermouth (wet or dry, according to taste)
- 2 dashes bitters
- Strain into chilled cocktail glass
- Garnish with a lemon twist and a maraschino cherry
